Bead Hoarders Blog Hop

Going for a ride on the Way Back Machine!

For Focus on Life, click HERE.

Lori Anderson has launched another Blog Hop. But this time we are instructed to reach into our hoarded beads and pull out something fabulous that we have been saving for a while.

Piece of cake, I have lots of beads I can use....

Except I was also prepping for an Arts Walk, and fighting the effects of a major heat wave. A few days ago, I had an idea. What about using that gigantic evil eye bead I got in Boston when I was in school. As in college. Sometime between 1973 and 1977.

Here's the bead and its smaller buddies, most of them bought at an import shop on Newberry Street, many moons ago.

I have used several of these beads before, in necklaces that I have since taken apart. But that big boy has never been used.

I simply strung it on some leather lacing. The three other beads are also glass, and come from the same stash.

All the beads are from that same shop, I think the glass evil eyes, and rustic ceramic beads are from Greece. Not sure about the others.

I tried to add more beads to the design, but they just didn't go.

When you have a bead as big as your palm, who needs anything more?

Now let's see what some others have found in their stashes.

  1. Seriously, I agree. A bead that big needs nothing else. It speaks for itself. How nostalgic to have a bead from the 70's. Cool, really cool.

  3. Such a cool necklace - simple is sometimes best. And I love that big guy - he doesn't want to share the limelight with anyone or anything else!

  7. That is a cool bead, and you are right it didn't need anything else. I didn't realize how huge it was until the last shot of it in your hand. Wow!

  8. Holy cow that's a big bead! I really like how you pulled your stash together - how cool is it that you were able to use a bead you've been hanging on to for so long? Great job! :)

  9. You know, I have a few beads left from the early eighties, when I was in grad school. That's when I first started making jewelry. It didn't occur to me to go that far back, but I'm so glad you reached way back into your stash, Beti, and pulled out this one! It makes for a fun story as well as a cool necklace! Peace on! :-)

  15. I second the nomination for longest bead hoarder. Honestly thought, kudos for finding a way to use that enormous bead--it turned out great! Sure to ward off all kinds of mischief :)

  16. I agree. Just because a bead is special doesn't mean you have to go nuts designing with it and add tons of other things with it. Thinking now, I should have probably said that when I talked about the hop -- don't worry about this but have fun, the bead is the thing. I know I didn't stray from my normal designing style all that much, although the focals were different than normal.

    Oh I rambled.

Thank you so much for playing, and I'm loving your use of the large and beautiful! :-)

    1. Thanks for your comment! I had no energy to create something complex, though I did try! This is the way I would have worn it 40 years ago. OMG...did I just say forty years????
