The big day, in Yellow and Black!!!
So this is the big day, when my partner, Bev Breisinger, who blogs at Country Frog Creations, and I get to see what we made with our swapped bead collections. Bead Soups. Or in the case of the wonderful beads Bev sent me: Bee Soup. Or maybe Bumble Beads.
Thanks to the indomitable Lori Anderson, literally hundreds of jewelry makers from all over the world participate in this bead swap and beady love fest. You can get a peek at Lori's work here: Bead Soup Blog Party.
So, as you can guess, Bev sent me yellow and black themed beads. I got a little carried away finding examples of yellow and black in commerce and nature. You have all the professional sports teams in Bev's corner of the world - Pittsburgh.
Then there are: Bumble bees. Black-eyed Susan flowers. Buffalo Wild Wings. Crime Scene Tape. Rain slickers. The Pittsburgh city flag. That costume in Kill Bill, worn by Uma Thurman. The one it is based on, from The Game of Death, worn by Bruce Lee. The Black and Yellow Challenger in Whiz Khalifa's video for Black and Yellow. And, well, I'm a librarian, I love this stuff!
But back to our original topic, my Bead Soup pieces!
Bev sent two focals, and two large coordinating beads that she crafted from polymer clay. They were fabulous, and very well made. I'm going to take a class later this spring to hone my polymer clay skills, she was inspirational!
Then, there were the small beads and spacers, two silver metal toggle clasps, and some other metal pieces, a decorated key, some shell beads, and on and on! I used most of the beads, and one pair of ear wires, and added a few things, notably two resin flowers, and some flat black beads. I really went all out on the yellow and black theme....
For my first piece, using the "main" focal, I knew I wanted to dangle some beads from it, and I dipped heavily into the rest of the soup to create a strung necklace on black leather cording, which can be seen in the back of the necklace, and forms a knotted closure.
Next came the earrings (did I mention I love earrings?)
Simple flower (or sun?) shaped beads dangle from an eye pin with some of the soup beads, and even soup wires.
The other polymer pieces were used in a necklace and bracelet, which also feature the clasps, you can join them to make a longer necklace!
I can't wait to see what Bev makes from this soup mix! Great minds think alike, and we both chose to challenge our partners with limited palettes.
Please be sure to visit Bev's Blog, Country Frog Creations, and sample some of the others work as well.

OMG! What awesomeness! You made such wonderful pieces with the ultimate Pittsburgh black & gold challenge I sent to you! I give you an E for Excellent or and A+. I had faith you could handle this challenge and you did wonderfully! I've made several pieces with my soup and have worn them already! Thanks for being a great Soup Partner!
ReplyDeleteBev, I really took the challenge part of this to heart! About halfway through, I started thinking about putting in some turquoise. But I was strong!
DeleteYou've been a busy bee, Betti :0) Lovely soup and charming ingredients you've to work with - you did a fine job!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun soup!!!!!!! Lovely work!
ReplyDeleteBumble beads! Ha! I love it. And I love what you did with your soup. Yellow is infamous in beading circles for being a challenging color (or for being the color to hate). You did a spectacular job.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun soup, you have made some wonderful pieces of jewellery with it.
ReplyDeleteOh my - I love this color of soup you got! You did a fantastic job with your creations! What fun!
ReplyDeleteVery nice! An entertaining color theme too!
ReplyDeleteThat soup would have been a challenge for me!! You did a great job with it!! VEry nice!!
ReplyDeleteWay a fun and challenging soup! I love your designs, especially the bumble bee bracelet and the sunny earrings!
ReplyDeleteI love them all, but my favorite is the focal that has the 'little bits' in it! Just sooo cute!! You did amazing! ~KM
ReplyDeleteSuch lovely work well done!
ReplyDeleteYou certainly did get a challenge, there, that you faced it head on and come up with a great set of pieces. See, this is why I love the BSBP. Well done you!

ReplyDeleteCan we say SPRING!!! All that yellow and black and bumble bees colors! Totally way over the top! Great job! Thanks for joining and posting!
ReplyDeleteI have been trying to capture a picture of the bumble bees in my yard...no luck yet!
DeleteHi Beti, Yellow is not a color I work with very often. I do like the yellow and black pairing though. You sure made that combo sing with your wonderful designs. I like the first necklace the best. It was clever of you to make the necklace and bracelet hook together for more options.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cheerful soup! I swapped with Bev in the past, and her packaging is still lovely, I see! Great job!
ReplyDeleteWhat a unique and fun design! I'm sure there is a Steeler's fan that will love everything you made!
ReplyDeleteLove the "Bumble bead" focal your partner sent. I've been really drawn to the black and yellow color combo lately. Fun piece you made with it. They all look really cool together.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pieces, I love yellow and blacks and you have outdone yourself on putting it all together, great job.
ReplyDeletevery inventive projects!congrats!
ReplyDeleteI love how you created your designs from the limited palette of your soup. It worked for you as you created gorgeous things!
ReplyDeleteOh, my, Beti - I love you got coordinated beads and went on a theme. And such a cheerful theme, I can't stop smiling! How fitting I was talking bees with my son today, bees must be one of my favourite little insects, I adore them. Love your pieces - and I **love** the necklace / bracelet / longer necklace idea, that's what I have in mind for my wrap bracelet when I get a coordinated extra toggle clasp. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThose are awesome, Beti! I especially love that first necklace, and the other one that is extendable..great planning!
ReplyDeleteI love what you did with those PITTSBURGH color beads that my dear friend Bev sent your way...I prefer to think of them as Bumble Beads...great idea!

What lovely yellow pumpkin! You definitely did it justice.
ReplyDeleteLove your bee-soup :D and what you made out of it! You fully embraced the bee-theme and with gorgeous results!
ReplyDeleteOh I LOVE this palette! It's so summery and striking! And kinda hippy-chic too. That first necklace is divine. I love how you've "striped" the beads and by keeping the same palette throughout the necklaces look fabulous layered together. So fun and funky!
ReplyDeleteLove your bees :-)
ReplyDeleteyour pieces are really "bee-ti-ful"
ReplyDeleteWhat a playful palette, yet your designs are very elegant, Beti :)
ReplyDeleteAll great designs! I really love your first necklace!
ReplyDeleteWow, what an interesting challenge you and your partner gave each other. Great work!
ReplyDeleteYour soup turned out great! What a great focal on your first necklace. My favorites are the earrings (such fun!) and the bracelet. The way you used the colors on that really make the yellow pop!
ReplyDeleteWow I would have been challenged for sure. I don't think I've ever actually made anything in yellow. But seeing your fun designs makes me want to give it a try. . The first necklace and earrings make me happy just to see them. They're just plain cheerful. Perfect for the rainy days of spring AND for those hot summer days!
ReplyDeleteHi, fellow beading librarian!

Love the convertible pieces! Such bright colors! Great job
ReplyDeleteOh, wow! Black and yellow........I could only think of bumblebees and the Steelers but you, clever lady came up with a whole bunch of things! You made some really clever pieces. Really like those earrings! They are my favs! But all are so pretty. I would have panicked with that palette! Well done.
ReplyDeleteI like every one of your creations. The bead caps capture the yellow beads nicely in the first necklace. You cooked up some great things here. (black is my FAV color)
ReplyDeleteI never did like yellow that much, but what you did with the color combination in this jewellery... beautiful! Your sun flower earrings are great!
ReplyDeleteLove the black and yellow combination and the way all of your pieces work together. Great idea to make the necklace and bracelet so they can become one longer necklace. Wonderful "happy " creations!
ReplyDeleteFun soup and a great collection of jewelry. I love the bead sequence on that first necklace!
ReplyDeleteWow, really challenging soups! I like the bumble bee theme and the first necklace is my favorite, the focal is gorgeous! Very clever design of the bracelet and necklace that can be combined in one piece!
